There were a lot of talking points coming out of the UFC 200 Press Conference at Madison Square Garden yesterday. One comment almost flew under the radar however, and it was a corker.
As the UFC officially unveiled the new Headline Fight for UFC 200, fireworks were expect as Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier were put in the same room. The barbs were flying back and forth early between the two Light Heavyweights, who have no love lost. Dana had to interject right at the beginning to allow questions from the press. It appeared as though the pair would just trade digs for forty minutes, until the intervention.
The rematch will come a full 18 months after Jon Jones beat Cormier to retain his title at UFC 182. The hype before that initial bout was palpable as the pair came to blows at a staredown a month out from the fight. Since then the heat has not cooled as Jones’ suspension allowed his former foe to win ‘his’ belt against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson. On winning the belt Cormier had just one thing to say in his post fight interview:
“Jon jones get your s*** together, i’m waiting for you”
Finally, after injury forced Cormier out of UFC 197, he will get his chance to fight his long time adversary on July 9th. Jones coming off a somewhat listless victory over Ovince Saint Preux last Saturday, didn’t impress the current Champion in his return to the octagon. Both Cormier and one member of the audience had some choice words for Jones at the Press Conference yesterday.
