Colby Covington is convinced he’s still “one of the best fighters in the world” and wants to continue pursuing the title. However, if he hangs the gloves, “Chaos” might consider jumping into politics and running as governor of Florida.

Covington failed to snatch the belt from Leon Edwards at UFC 296 this month. This started the talk about the possibility of the fighter no longer having the chance to get another title shot, making his future in the MMA world kind of murky. Nonetheless, the American seemingly has backup plans in case he has to exit the octagon. For Covington, it is the politics, stating he wants to someday serve the state of Florida as its governor.

“I’m smarter than that,” Covington said on the PBD Podcast. “I can use my mind, and I have the intellect to be able to navigate the waters to get me where I want to go in life. I haven’t thought about it. I do want to get into politics one day because I want to fight for what I believe in. I want to get into Congress, maybe Senate, something like that. Maybe be the governor of Florida. That would be my ultimate dream is to be governor of this state.”

Despite sharing this vision, the trash-talker fighter knows that it is far in the future as he still doesn’t have the intention to leave his MMA career. Assessing his recent bout, the fighter suggested that surviving the five rounds proves he still can continue his career.

“I feel like when you start putting that one foot out and start thinking about what’s next, then you should probably retire,” Covington said. “You’re not still completely invested in fighting. So, I still know I’m one of the best fighters in the world.

“I just went five rounds with the supposed champion who was supposed to just completely decimate me. It was a very competitive fight, could’ve gone either way. So, I know I’m so much more than a fighter, though.”
