Little over a month ago UFC play-by-play commentator Mike Goldberg was released. After serving 20 years with the UFC, ‘Goldie’ was dropped like a bad habit. Haven taken over the promotion for $4 Billion last year, WME-IMG were making heads roll.
Firing Goldberg won the new UFC owners no fans. Confusing as it was frustrating, Goldberg’s departure was not on good terms either. Releasing a statement just weeks after being canned, Goldberg sounded distraught.
Goldberg’s Statement
“Around December 1, I got the news that my contract would not be renewed. So I was given about a month’s notice and I had a couple of shows left. I had Urijah Faber’s last show, which was awesome. The trip to Toronto, and of course UFC 207 was my last show.”
“I was one of a lot of people, a lot of good people from the ZUFFA era that got caught. So I feel for my co-workers, for my friends as much as I felt for myself. I watched everything around me be shattered. It took 15 years to build this wonderful family, and it felt like it took 15 minutes to destroy it. And it was a really tough time, and it’s still a tough time because there may be more to come. This is not uncommon with an ownership change.”
Speaking during last night’s UFC 208 card in New York, Goldberg sounded upbeat:

Although obviously not for the UFC, Mike Goldberg is clearly not done commentating. Recent reports of talks with Bellator MMA are interesting, to say the least. Other options are available, but BMMA would seem an obvious second choice behind the UFC.
Missing the UFC’s dream commentary team? Us too, but Goldberg will be back on the mic, the question is where?
