2. Pablo Garza vs. Fredson Paixao

Pablo Garza picked a great time to make an impression. This was actually the first ever featherweight bout in the UFC, and what a way to start!

Garza is someone who had to grind to get into the UFC. Years earlier he lost in the opening round of the Ultimate Fighter after dropping a decision to Michael Johnson. He fought on smaller shows and finally got signed by the WEC. When the WEC merged with the UFC, Garza finally got the opportunity he’d wanted on the big show.

As for Paixao, this looked to be a dangerous situation for him at the time. He was completely unconscious for a few minutes and had to be given oxygen. He was taken out on a stretcher while wearing a neck brace. He wouldn’t fight again for 2 years after this bout, dropping a split-decision to Lance Palmer. Paixao is a highly-touted BJJ instructor and has been focussing on that instead of fighting ever since.
