To prove her determination to be treated as equal to men inside the boxing ring, Amanda Serrano vacated her title as WBC continues to deny her request to be allowed to a 12-round bout.

Unified featherweight world champion Amanda Serrano was one of the female boxers who voiced their demand in October to be allowed to have 12 three-minute rounds during championships. This will be a huge change for female boxers who can only have 10 two-minute rounds in their bouts. However, WBC stays firm on its policy, stressing the limit is for the “safety and well-being of the fighters.”

To protest the unbudging stance of WBC, Serrano announced that she is leaving her 126-pound title. According to the female fighter, the act is part of her push to force organizations in her field to treat women equally as men. With this, Serrano also said she would only take 12 three-minute rounds for the rest of her career. It can be recalled that the boxer already did it with Daniela Ramos, whom she defeated in October.

Serrano, who signed a contract with PFL this year to fight in the promotion’s MMA PPV Superfight Division, said she would just observe men’s rules in all the championships she would take in the future.

In her recent post on Instagram, Serrano explained her decision, stressing that women can do what men do inside the ring.

I love boxing. I have given my life to this sport. No phone, no boyfriend, no parties. Just boxing.

I am the only boxer, male or female, from Puerto Rico to become undisputed champion. I am the only female boxer to have won titles in 7 divisions. I am the first female boxer, along with Katie to headline Madison Sqaure Garden. I am the first female boxer to make 7 figures from a fight and the same from sponsors.

And I am the first undisputed female champion to fight 12×3 minute rounds.

Moving forward if a sanctioning body doesn’t want to give me and my fellow fighters the choice to fight the same as the men, then I will not be fighting for that sanctioning body.

The WBC has refused to evolve the sport for equality. So I am relinquishing their title.

Thank You to the sanctioning bodies who have evolved for Equality!

If you want to face me in the ring, you have a choice. I’ve made mine.

Thank you to all of my fellow fighters who have stood with me. Thank you to my team. Thank you to my fans. And above all, thank you God. I’m blessed.
