Brandon Moreno has a new opponent to face in Mexico City. Instead of Amir Albazi, the UFC announced that the former flyweight champ will fight Brandon Royval, who recently lost in his title shot battle.
The promotion made the official announcement this Thursday but refused to divulge the reason behind Albazi’s removal. Fortunately for Moreno, Royval is a familiar face in his record.
The two first fought in November 2020 at UFC 255, where the former champ made a first-round TKO win against the opponent. Despite this, Royval redeemed himself and earned a title shot against current champ Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 296. Although he lost again, the fight could give him a remarkable return to the winning column, given Moreno’s status as a former title holder.
“The Assassin Baby,” of course, won’t be an easy match. Prior to losing the belt to Pantoja at UFC 290, the fighter made a long winning streak. The Mexican even served as the backup in the Royval vs. Pantoja fight recently, allowing him to be in good shape prior to this fight. Moreno also defeated some remarkable fights with some notable names in the division, including former two-time champ Deiveson Figueiredo. Most of all, Moreno has already defeated Royval in the past, further boosting his chance to secure this bout on his side.
