Cory Sandhagen just landed a potential knockout of the year contender against an elite UFC veteran, Frankie Edgar. The flying knee was so clean and landed perfectly that it made Edgar go to sleep in a split second. Sandhagen did have a significant height advantage but to land it against a former lightweight champion so accurate shows that he deserves to fight for the title.
The fight ended early, and Sandhagen pretty much had no damage received. It was a quick night in the office for the #2 ranked bantamweight. Sandhagen showed he evolved after the Sterling loss, he looked loose and calm in his fights against Moraes and Edgar. Some predicted that Edgar would use his wrestling to beat Sandhagen but unfortunately the knockout strike came first.
His last loss against Sterling, it showed that he had problems with the grappling aspects of the fight. It would have been nice to see Sandhagen’s grappling against a great wrestler like Frankie Edgar but the find ended so early that he was not able to showcase it.
During his post fight interview, Sandhagen wants to fight the winner of Yan vs Sterling. He thinks that he deserves it more than anyone. He said that he has gotten better after the Sterling loss and predicts a knockout against the champion by the month of July. Sandhagen also thinks that Dillashaw does not deserve a title shot, after serving his suspension for EPO.
As for Edgar, no official statement from him but he should think about retiring. He has had a great career and has nothing left to prove. He was the lightweight champion and was a title contender in the featherweight division. Even his opponent, Sandhagen had tremendous respect to Edgar after the fight. So we will see whether Edgar wants to hang up the gloves or get back in the Octagon once more.
