McGregor Gets Stripped of UFC Lightweight Title
It’s already happened with the featherweight belt, and if McGregor is shelved for too long a period, it can happen with the lightweight title too. Currently, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are fighting over an interim lightweight belt. If McGregor is unable to defend his strap within a stipulated amount of time, the UFC has full right to take his title away.
They can award it to the interim champion, which is either 1a or 1b of the lightweight division. If he gets stripped of the lightweight title, that would make two times it has happened to him. He can’t go back to featherweight, it’s too much of a weight cut.
McGregor Spends an Extended Time Away from the Octagon
If McGregor decides to pursue a megabout with Mayweather, and White makes good on his vow to destroy him, then it could mean we might never see McGregor in the Octagon ever again.
McGregor has been one of the UFC’s most active fighters. In just a few short years, he’s won titles in two weight divisions, stopped nearly everyone in his path and rose to superstardom. If he is unable to compete for an extended period, McGregor could lose everything he worked so hard to build.
He’s a young champion and he’s in his prime. It would be terrible for McGregor to waste his best years sitting on the couch somewhere watching the fights instead of actually participating in them. That’s just a shame, but it’s also a big possibility.
