2. vs. Takanori Gomi UFC 135

This was an important fight for Diaz. It marked his return to lightweight after a somewhat unsuccessful stint at welterweight. It was also a chance for Diaz to take on a former Pride lightweight champion, and household MMA name in Taknori Gomi.

Gomi had actually met Nate’s brother in Nick’s only fight in Pride. That fight was originally a submission victory for Nick, but surprise surprise Nick Diaz failed the post-fight drug test for marijuana. The fight was actually over-turned for the result as it was ruled by the athletic commission that Diaz was under the influence of marijuana while fighting, and that this gave him an advantage by numbing him to pain.

Nevada State Athletic Commission doctor, Tony Alamo, was quoted as saying, “I was there at this fight and believe that you were intoxicated and that it made you numb to the pain. Did it help you win? I think it did.” in reference to Nick’s state during this fight.

Nate didn’t have much trouble with his brother’s old rival. Nate almost got him in a guillotine, then had him locked up good in a triangle before transitioning to an armbar and ultimately making Gomi tap.
