After defeating Russian fighter Sergei Pavlovich, Interim Heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall said he would rest. Nonetheless, the Briton is clear about his next dream: fighting Jon Jones.
The interim heavyweight fight is truly one of the best parts of UFC 295 on Saturday, and one of the fighters who didn’t fail to impress us is Aspinall. At just 1:09 of Round 1, the British knocked out Pavlovich, making it a quick and easy win for him despite having only 17 days to prepare.
To recall, Jones withdrew from his fight against Stipe Miocic, pushing UFC to create the battle against Aspinall and Pavlovich. And now that he already has the belt after stepping into a fight on short notice, the new champ wants to rest.
“Right now I want to take a little break,” Aspinall told UFC.com. “I don’t want to fight again this year. I’ve had enough of this nerves thing and pressure. I want a little bit of time off.”
After recovery, nonetheless, Aspinall is determined to fight Jones. This is not surprising. Prior to his recent fight, he’s always been vocal about his “dream fight” against the American. Aspinall reiterated this in his recent statement to UFC.
“I want to fight Jon Jones,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of contenders coming up at the moment, but I want to fight Jon Jones. That’s my goal.
“He’s in my opinion one of top two greatest ever with GSP [Georges St-Pierre]. I want to test myself against him before my career is over and more importantly before his career is over. He’s coming to the end and I’m just getting started. That’s the fight I want, definitely.”
