Wanderlei Silva
Wanderlei Silva is one of the sport’s most feared and revered brawlers, but his reputation was permanently damaged in 2014 after he fled a random drug test in Las Vegas.
Silva was preparing for a grudge match with Chael Sonnen at the time when an NSAC drug testing official located him at his gym, where he agreed to undertake the test, but then asked if could go and speak to someone and subsequently managed to get out of the NSAC employee’s line of sight and flee the building through a back exit.
That decision would prove to be a costly one for Silva, who later admitted at an official hearing that he had ran out the back door fearing that he would test positive for using a banned diuretic – though of course we only have his word for that.
NSAC threw the book at Silva for his actions, banning him for life, though a year later that ruling was overturned by a judge and he eventually served a three year suspension instead.
After also badmouthing the UFC during his layoff, accusing them of match-fixing, the increasingly agitated Silva eventually apologized and was released from the promotion with his legacy now having a permanent black mark against it.
