Alexander Gustafsson is now back in training to “get back in shape.” Yet, the Swedish is not also closing the doors about making a return to the octagon, especially since he still has a contract to finish with the UFC.
Gustafsson is one of the most notable fighters in the promotion. “The Mauler” landed title shots twice and faced huge names in the promotion in the past, including Jon Jones, Anthony Smith, Daniel Cormier, Jan Blachowicz, and Glover Teixeira. However, the veteran experienced a four-fight losing skid before going to a break, with his last fight being against Nikita Krylov, who defeated him via a first-round KO in July 2022.
Now, after more than a year of absence in the cage, Gustafsson has continued his training. Yet, the 36-year-old wants to point out that the move is “mainly” for himself.
“I’m focusing on myself and getting back in shape, and also I love this game,” Gustafsson shared on Frontkick Online. “I love to train and be around the guys and do some grappling, do some wrestling, hit some pads and do some light sparring. I’ve been doing this my whole career, so I’m glad to be back and do what I love to do.”
Despite this, the Swede is not closing the doors to the possibility of training to prepare for a fight in the future, especially for the UFC, which still holds a contract with him.
“I’m going to be here much more now and focus a little bit on myself and my own training and mainly get back in shape,” Gustafsson said on Frontkick Online. “I don’t think about the competing part so much. If it comes, it comes, so time will tell…
“If a fight is on the table, let’s talk about that and see how it feels and take it from there. I have the contract with the UFC. I have been with the UFC since 2009, so it’s been a while. I’m still in the business. I’m still under contract. If I fight, it would be in the UFC.”
