It seems the biggest boxing star is looking to unify the division and become the undisputed champion. It basically means beating all the active current champions of the super middleweight division.
Canelo is may be set to face WBC Mandatory Challenger Avni Yildrim in February. It seems to be a sure fight since if he wants to unify the belts, he needs to face the mandatory challenger in order to avoid being stripped.
When Canelo fights it is usually a celebration in Mexico and his countrymen always tune in. Canelo’s regular schedule had the pandemic not happened is that he fights on Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.
“I want to take all of the titles (at 168). My goal is to fight anyone at 168 if they have a title, that’s who I’m going to go after. The goal is February, May, and September. That’s our goal for 2021.” Canelo said
Unless the current champions fight each other for a unification, Canelo’s schedule will be busy. He is currently the WBC and WBA Super Middleweight Champion and is looking to fight 3 more champions if he wants to unify all the belts. Carlos Gongora, Caleb Plant, and Billy Joe Saunders are the three remaining champions.
Billy Joe Saunders always called out Alvarez for that coveted payday that he will get if he fights Canelo. Both were almost scheduled to fight but due to the fighter wanting to have a bigger payday it did not happen. Canelo was still scheduled to find another opponent but failed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
It will be interesting to see Canelo’s journey to the title unification. Will he take him all down one by one and dominate easily or will there be an upset from current champions. Whenever Canelo fights, all of Mexico watch so it is indeed a big fight. He is also the current #1 Pound for Pound boxer in the world.
