Alexander Volkanovski is determined not only to be a part of the historic UFC 300 but also to be its main event. And if the featherweight champ is to be asked, it would have to be a lightweight fight.

“The Great” is certain that he will be able to successfully defend his belt against Ilia Topuria this Saturday. And even though the fight could be considered risky for him, Volkanovski already has plans in the future: a match at the UFC 300 event in April. This will be a quick turnaround for the Australian, but it is not surprising since his fight this weekend is also considered one after losing to a lightweight bout against Islam Makhachev last October.

In his most recent interview, Volkanovski shared his intent to take another 155-pound match in the event. Given that the card still has a main card missing, Volkanovski is more than willing to headline the event.

“I’m more than happy to fight in the UFC 300 main event,” Volkanovski told Sports Illustrated recently. “It wouldn’t be a featherweight fight. It would have to be a lightweight opponent, and I’d be more than happy to take that on.”

Prior to that, the 35-year-old also entertained the possibility of another champ vs. champ fight at UFC 300. With no featherweights on his choice, the champ said he would like to face welterweight champ Leon Edwards, who is reportedly one of the options on the main card of the event. Of course, the chances of any of these fights happening still depend on how his title defense this weekend will end up. For Topuria, however, the opponent will “still be in the hospital” and “recovering” while the huge event is taking place.
