If you thought Mayweather vs. McGregor wasn't going to happen, you probably underestimated how much money there was to be made...

Seriously? Yep, seriously…

When the rumours of Conor McGregor fighting Floyd Mayweather started, it was almost regarded as a joke. Fans couldn’t take the concept of this fight seriously, and to an extent it’s understandable.

McGregor, albeit a highly talented striker in MMA, has never fought as a professional boxer. Being a good MMA striker is worlds away from being a good boxer, and Mayweather is the most technically sound, perhaps ever.

In the face of all the doubt and hate, the fight became official earlier this month. On August 26, 2017, one of the best boxers to ever live will square off against a man who has never boxed.

But there’s at least one twist…

Conor McGregor has the edge in age, but the experience is all on Floyd Mayweather’s side…apart from one small factor…

One Advantage For McGregor

According to Showtime executive vice president Stephen Espinoza, Conor McGregor is allowed to throw a superman punch against Floyd Mayweather. The move that was coined in kickboxing has become commonplace in MMA, but it’s one that ‘Money’ won’t have seen before:

“That’s well within the rules. A back fist probably wouldn’t be, but there is a lot of different things that can be thrown to throw off timing,” Espinoza said. “I can guarantee Floyd has never seen someone coming and throwing a Superman punch.”

Interesting. So McGregor will be able to use some MMA technique, but will he be spamming superman punches all night? H/T to LowKickMMA, McGregor’s manager says he is confident in his fighter:

Conor McGregor will make his pro boxing debut against one of the greatest ring technicians ever, Floyd Mayweather. Is this an ill-fated task for the Irish UFC star?

“Hi Haters”

“Conor is a very ambitious young man. And those are two key words, young and ambitious,” said Attar on a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. “He has a lot more that he wants to accomplish athletically and a businessman. He definitely want to fight in MMA again. If all goes well and he feels good, he could fight at the end of the year. There are no guarantees, but it’s definitely in his plans to come back and compete again in the UFC.’

“Hi haters,” he laughed. “It’s the same people that said it wasn’t going to happen, so you can’t pay attention to all of that negativity. If you paid attention to all the people that told you that you can’t, then you are not going to be living out your dream. My thing to them is, ‘tune in and watch and we will see.’ That’s a mistake. This is a young man that knows how to throw them hands and has all the skills he needs to compete at the highest level. On August 26, I’m confident he will go out there and shock the world,” he said, adding that he believes McGregor will knockout Mayweather.

Are we witnessing the first MMA fighter to cross over and completely conquer boxing? Guess only time will tell.
