After his earlier remark that pushed the MMA world to outrage, Colby Covington is back with another comment about Leon Edwards’ murdered father. According to “Chaos,” he doesn’t regret his earlier insult, adding that the champ’s father is “same level” as Adolf Hitler.
Covington made an earlier comment about Edwards’ father, who was murdered in London when the fighter was still 13. This almost led to a melee during the UFC 296 pre-fight press conference, with Edwards throwing a bottle and charging toward the trash-talker. Fellow fighters and the MMA community also sided with Edwards, including UFC CEO Dana White, who lambasted Covington’s move.
Despite this, the American is indifferent to the backlash and made another remark based on Edwards’ earlier admission that his later father was involved in some unfavorable activities in Jamaica and in the UK.
“I’m doubling down. Why would I feel bad?” Covington said on the PBD Podcast. “Anything I say about someone who is such a criminal and put so much pain people’s lives, I’m not gonna feel bad for someone like that. Just like Hitler, he was a terrible person. I’m not comparing him to Hitler, but I’m saying it’s that same level of bad guy.”
This caused another wave of fury from the community, but others pointed out that it could just be the fighter’s attempt to stay relevant, especially with questions circulating on whether Covington could still get a title shot or even a fight offer from the UFC. As mentioned, White also expressed disappointment over the “slow and old” fighters’ last performance at the UFC 296, where he lost to Edwards via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).
