Meryl Streep is an actress your Mom might like. And evidently she is not a fan of mixed martial arts. She went as far as to say that the martial arts aren’t really arts at all.

During her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes last night, Streep took the opportunity to take a few shots at President-elect, and former MMA promoter, Donald Trump. She was speaking about how many non-Americans work in Hollywood as she took aim at Trump’s anti-immigration policies. Fair enough, but what’s with the unprovoked shot at MMA??

Meryl Streep Rips MMA

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

How dare you madam???

First of all, most fans of this website or MMA in general would rather sit through Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida or Severn vs. Shamrock from UFC 9 on repeat viewing before any of Meryl Streep’s movies (aside from Deer Hunter. Deer Hunter was epic).

Second of all if Trump kicks all the foreigners out we’d be left with no Brazilians fighting in the USA. That would be terrible, though still not worse than sitting through “the Iron Lady”, “Mamma Mia” or some other movie your Mom probably saw with her friends.

Dana White Cautiously Doesn’t Call Streep the “B-word”

Dana White responded to Streep’s comments in the video below. He refers to the 67-year old Streep as an “uppity 80-year-old lady”. One has to wonder if he really wanted to finish that sentence with a word other than “lady”.

He continued to say Of course it’s an art. These fighters, these men and women are so talented. … Saying something stupid like that is like saying she’s not a talented actress, which she is,” White stated to TMZ.

“We have fighters from all over the world. … She’s not educated about the sport and that was a completely uneducated comment.”

Fighters (and Trump) Respond

For reasons I can’t comprehend, numerous members of the MMA community were watching. Some even chimed in afterwards.

Vick has a fight coming up on February 4th, good to see he took time away from training to watch the Golden Globes…

McCrory has lost 3 of his last 4, so he might be a little on-edge in general these days.

Unconfirmed rumours are that Makovsky is looking forward to Streep’s role in the upcoming film “Mary Poppins Returns”.

Barnett is to drug test failures what Meryl Streep is to Golden Globe and Oscar awards. Both are really the top of their profession in that regards.

Trump, like Dana, was careful not to use the o’l B-word as well.

Scott Coker also chimed in, but after Bellator 149 he really shouldn’t be allowed to speak on such matters.

To be fair, Meryl Streep is said to be one of the nicest and most respected people in Hollywood (I asked my Mom, that’s what she said). She simply doesn’t understand the talent, skill and hard-work that is put in by all mixed martial artists.
