Conor McGregor is finally coming back and it looks like Donald Cerrone is first in line to fight him. The Irishman confirmed last week that he’s going to return on January 18th 2020. That’s a massive coup for the UFC – if they can get him to agree to terms.

First of all, though, they have to find an appropriate opponent. Right now there are two clear frontrunners. Justin Gaethje has had a phenomenal 2020. ‘The Highlight’ is a true knockout artist now. He brings carnage to every contest. But by all accounts, he’s second in line to take on ‘The Notorious.’

Donald Cerrone is believed to be at the top of the line. He’s considered the ideal opponent for McGregor’s return. After over a year out of action, McGregor wants to reignite his MMA career. A win over Cerrone would be a positive step on the ladder. Now ‘Cowboy’ has revealed that negotiations are ongoing but he’s feeling very positive.

Red Panty Night

There were a number of rumours about this match-up over the last year. However, it never came to fruition. Now though it looks like it’s going to happen. Cerrone is in the right time at the right place. Although most diehard MMA fans would prefer to see McGregor fight Justin Gaethje, ‘Cowboy’ is the most likely option.

“I think it’s going to happen this time,” Cerrone told TMZ. “I really do. Conor is really serious about making a comeback. I think Conor’s side and our team have both reached out and are trying to figure it out. Looking good, though.”

Huge Fight

Cerrone is adamant that this would be a big fight. Of course, any bout involving McGregor is a massive money-spinner. ‘Cowboy’ is probably one of the best match-ups for the Irishman. In short, he’s not a wrestler and he has name value. When you add in Cerrone’s age, you can see why McGregor would be eager to fight him. Cerrone said:

“This is going to be a huge fight, a huge money-maker. I don’t understand why UFC wouldn’t want to be engaged in it. Conor would be pumped on it, I’m pumped on it. It’s the fight everyone wants to watch. He’s the best in the business at talking sh-t, so it should be fun. We’ll see how crazy he gets. It’s gonna be a fun fight. He’s a great fighter. Sign the damn deal, let’s get this done.”

Struggle

Only time will tell whether or not McGregor actually does sign a deal. First of all, he needs to agree on terms with the UFC. But that’s easier said than done. Even if he does sign a contract, there a number of on-going legal situations that could scupper any fight.

‘The Notorious’ is under investigation for two alleged sexual assaults in Dublin, Ireland. However, he is not facing charges yet. What is clear is that he has lost fans in the last two years. McGregor needs to stabilise that very quickly. Getting back into the octagon is an easy way to do that.
