Not only that, she was supposed to fight a 53-year-old woman…

Gabi Garcia is a large woman. Further evidence of this came today at the weigh-in for her upcoming Rizin fight with a 53-year-old woman. Also, even if she had made weight, she still would have weighed 47lbs more than her opponent.

Garcia agreed to fight at 209lbs while her opponent weighed-in at 162lbs. The rather noticeable Brazilain fighter missed weight for her upcoming bout by 27lbs… or 1/5 of Mighty Mouse.

The most she could get down to was 236lbs.

Shinobu Kandori is the name of the elderly fighter who initially agreed to take on Garcia despite the weight disadvantage. It was to be her first fight in 17 years. Following Garcia’s revelation she was 1/5 a GOAT overweight, her opponent appeared to have walked out, although, as of this writing, the promotion has not released word about whether the bout will take place. She did not sound happy.

Technically, if the fight is canceled, Garcia will remain undefeated so far in her rather peculiar MMA career.

Garcia vs. Kandori was/is expected to take place December 29th in Japan, one of 2 shows in 3 days for the promotion. The 2nd show will feature Mirko Cro Crop vs Tsuyoshi Kosaka and Takanori Gomi vs Yusuke Yachi on December 31st.

Gabi Garcia MMA Career

A 6-time jiu-jitsu champion, Garcia was first introduced to MMA fans outside of Brazil via the Ultimate Fighter. Her rather unique appearance drew attention while she served as a jiu-jitsu coach for Team Wanderlei Silva.

Garcia is 4-0-1 in MMA. After winning the Rizin promotion’s Grand Prix tournament last year, her first round bout in the tournament this year ended in a no-contest after she poked her opponent in the eye.

Garcia was also DQ’ed in a shoot-boxing fight earlier this year for soccer kicking her opponent.

Video: Gabi Garcia Just a Touch off Weight/ Opponent Screams and Bails

While Garcia’s scheduled opponent for tomorrow was willing to accept the nearly 50lbs initial weight disadvantage, and 21 year age disadvantage, somehow when you tacked on the additional 1/5 of Mighty Mouse, she just wasn’t going to do it. She had reached her limit and stormed off the stage. Perhaps they will fight tomorrow…?

Earlier this year, Garcia reported she had been attacked by someone posing as a fan. She released a statement regarding the incident which has been transcribed previously as saying:

“One guy open the door in one black Mustang, ‘Hey Gabi!’ and I’m with my jacket Team Gabi Garcia… (he says) ‘Why you no punch my face? You just accept fight with old ladies.’ (I say) ‘Man, what you talking about?’ and the guy kick me, kick my leg. The guy kick hard my leg and entering the car and leaving.”

“I call for the security. I call for the guys working in the place for the cameras, for looking the cameras and everything… but guys, the thing is respect people. It’s not important. It’s my job. It’s my choice.”
