Gervonta Davis is following in the footsteps of his mentor Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about his achievements in the boxing ring. Coral Gaps police arrested the two-weight world champion for domestic battery. He’s not a very popular man right now following the incident at a charity basketball game in Florida.
This isn’t the first time Davis has been in trouble with the law. Cops also arrested him in 2017 for assaulting a friend. However, the charges on that occasion were dropped. Unfortunately for Davis, when you lift up a woman by the neck at a public event, it’s going to get noticed.
The woman in question is Andretta Smothers. A social media influencer, Smothers is the mother of Davis’s daughter. You don’t want this sort of behavior to be on the internet forever. With a big 2020 on the horizon for Davis, this really wasn’t a smart move.

As you can see from the clips above and below, Davis lifted up Smothers by the neck following an argument. Security then removed the pair from the venue. Coral Gaps Police Department confirmed that they were opening an investigation. Davis handed himself into police who issued the below statement:
Clearly ‘Tank’ has some anger management problems that he needs to address because that’s not smart at all.

Davis later tried to defend himself on Instagram. He confirmed that he was aggressive but denied hurting her. Somehow he didn’t realize that grabbing a woman by the throat in front of the watching world might be a traumatic experience. As many have said, who knows what happens behind closed doors?
“I never once hit her, yea I was aggressive and told her come on… that’s the mother of my child I would never hurt her other than that happy New Years.. January was trash.”
‘Tank’ obviously knows a lot about trash. We suggest putting him in a ring with Derrick Lewis and no cameras. That might teach him a lesson or two about how to behave towards women.

Currently the WBA lightweight champion, Davis is unbeaten with a record of 23-0. That includes 22 knockouts. However, he hasn’t really fought elite opposition yet. The champion could change that this year. Will Davis fight the winner of Lomachenko v Lopez?
Probably not. His management will look to protect him for as long as possible. It will be interesting to see how this domestic battery charge affects his popularity. Davis can be a superstar if he manages his life outside the cage. Critics have targeted his conditioning in the past.
Floyd Mayweather has always kept himself in tip-top shape. Davis needs to be more like him and less like Adrien Broner. If he wants to beat an elite fighter like ‘Loma’ then this is what he needs to do.
