One of the main concerns about Kayla Harrison moving to the bantamweight is whether she could make the weight. Holly Holm, who is set to face the former PFL fighter, is also thinking about the matter but has a fate that the opponent would do her best to make the weight.
Harrison’s move to UFC is huge news to fans. Yet, aside from that, the MMA world is divided about the fighter’s decision to jump to the 135-pound class weight. For someone who fought most of her fights under the 155-pound division, such a weight cut would be significant for the fighter, pushing fans and pros to doubt Harrison’s success in making the weight.
Harrison still has more than two months to reach the weight requirement for the division, and Holm believes the former PFl talent “can be professional about it.” For “The Preacher’s Daughter,” it is a must, suggesting she won’t settle for a catchweight.
“I’m on the stance that you need to make weight, that’s just how it is,” Holm told The MMA Hour. “I think that her mind set should be on, ‘I’m going to make weight,’ because she took the fight at 135. So I think it’s simple. I don’t think it should be super detailed.
“You think about the fight with ‘Wonderboy’ [Stephen Thompson], his opponent came in three pounds over and people were like, ‘Oh, it’s only three pounds.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, if it’s only three pounds, then go lose the three pounds.’ You know what I mean? There’s two ways to look at it. It’s only this or it’s only that. You can look at it from a lot of different angles, but as a professional, find out how to make weight. I work hard to make my weight, so I expect the same.”
