Is Nick Diaz the Biggest Fight for Jorge Masvidal?

Jorge Masvidal is one of the biggest draws in MMA right now. ‘Gamebred’ has had a stellar year. First of all, he knocked out Darren Till in brutal fashion. Then he scorched Ben Askren by way of flying knee in just five seconds. Finally, he beat Nate Diaz by TKO after a doctor’s stoppage. Now, he’s the BMF champion.

The big question for him is who to fight next. Despite saying he’d fight Diaz in a rematch, the UFC isn’t inclined to make that happen. However, he has put himself in place for the next title shot against the winner of Kamaru Usman v Colby Covington. If ‘Chaos’ wins, then that’s a big fight.

But one of the biggest potential match-ups is against Nick Diaz. The pair have gone back and forth with comments to the media over the past week. Chael Sonnen believes that this would be an even bigger fight than the BMF title. We’re inclined to agree. Could Masvidal be the Diaz Killer?

Economics

Sonnen believes that because Nick Diaz hasn’t fought for five years, this would make a potential match-up with Masvidal all the more exciting. He definitely has a point in that regard. Plus Diaz is a more natural star than his younger brother who only broke free of his shadow because of Conor McGregor.

“You know what, simple economics,” Sonnen said on ESPN radio. “The law of supply and demand. The greatest law in all of economics says that if you don’t have very much Nick and you can get a Nick one time, that that’s more valuable than Nate a third time. So I think that it’s great but I also think that you really can’t redo that story. I mean I’d have to go back to what? It was Tito Ortiz that fought Frank Shamrock, so then big brother Ken’s gonna step in and make things right.”

Redemption

Although Sonnen was incorrect about Ortiz beating Frank Shamrock, he still has a point. His fight (and loss) against Frank did stir up the rivalry with Ken later. The narrative is there for Nick to come back after five years on the sidelines to avenge his brother’s loss.

“We don’t have to get into the X’s and O’s,” Sonnen continued. “Just for fun right now, I think Nick would be the bigger fight. Don’t forget, I’m not insulting Nate. Nate just sold out Madison Square Garden, had the rocking attendance, had the President in attendance. I’m not slighting Nate but don’t you agree with me? I mean come on, there would be something special if big brother stepped in to get redemption for little brother.”

Fight

For his part, ‘Gamebred’ is more than happy to take on the elder Diaz. He doesn’t want to go back-and-forth though. If they’re going to fight, he just wants a deal to be done. Masvidal is all about keeping it real.

“Is he asking to fight?” Masvidal said. “I was confused or are we going for a walk some place? He’s asking for a fight? He’s asking for a fight or to go for a walk? Does he know who he’s asking for a fight? Cause I love to fight, especially when I get a little something on top of that.”
