We’ve heard of a story growing legs but the recent gossip surrounding Conor McGregor has grown legs, arms and has formed a very loose grasp of reality. It’s hard to know where the rumors end and the truth begins.

The latest series of stories have suggested that McGregor will be fighting Floyd Mayweather in September and also coach The Ultimate Fighter alongside bitter rival Nate Diaz. As crazy as it sounds, the two stories coming out together actually makes sense. If McGregor were to be allowed contractually, to fight in a boxing ring, it would hugely benefit the promotion to have their star asset still relevant in the UFC.

All the speculation, despite saturating all MMA media coverage over the last few weeks, is still somehow generating intrigue. Even though the Mayweather vs McGregor boxing fight seems extremely unlikely from a sporting point of view, as a business transaction and spectacle alike, it makes perfect sense.

It’s a win-win for the ‘Notorious’. If he did somehow manage to upset the odds (likely to be the longest odds in boxing history), McGregor will go down in history as one of the greatest fighters of all time. That outcome is almost a mute point however, as it is so unlikely. If the Dublin native were to fight him and to lose, he has simply lost to one of the greatest boxers of all time. It would not effect his MMA credentials.
