The UFC’s biggest star, Conor McGregor has faced his first career knockout against the hands of a guy he beat in their first encounter. McGregor thinks that the ring inactivity may have played a huge factor in his loss, so what better way to reduce inactivity then fight as soon as possible.
Although Conor McGregor may have to sit out a bit more as he needs his legs to recover and also needs to get back on the drawing board. He suffered brutal leg swelling that led to a knockout. During the fight with Poirier, he got clipped and could not move out of the centerline, it was because of his banged up lead leg.
McGregor has had a history of getting an immediate rematch, when he fought Diaz, he immediately wanted to get back and fight as soon as he can. He was successful in changing his game plan against Nate Diaz where he was more efficient with his strike. In his defense, he was clearly winning the fight in the early parts of the fight, Diaz was even bloodied up in just the first round. It was also McGregor’s peak in MMA.
During his fight with Poirier, he had moments where he clipped Poirier with solid combos but Poirier was just composed and more durable than their first fight. McGregor could have won the first round but it was also close.
With regards to the UFC granting a third match with McGregor, it would not be wise give him immediately. The Lightweight belt is vacant and Poirier is the one that clearly in the conversation to fight for it. Obviously Poirier wants the McGregor fight because fighting him gives him the biggest payday possible.
McGregor should also prove that he is still hungry enough to become a two time lightweight champion. He already has money so what could possibly motivate him, to stay hungry. The UFC could book another lightweight contender is that ranked lower than him.
