Emile Griffith vs. Benny Paret
Griffith and Paret met for the third time in their boxing careers on March 24 1962, and it was a fight overshadowed by a sense of loss. The world welterweight title was on the line, and a fired up Griffiths made a rally in the 12th round.
As Paret’s unconscious body stayed standing due to the poor rope design, Griffith battered him in to a coma from which he’d never awake. ‘Kid’ Paret died just over a week later in hospital, and it was later learned that Griffith was so angry because of a homophobic slur that Paret had called him during the weigh-in.
