In terms of the welterweight division, the biggest money fight to make is obviously Covington vs Masvidal. Not only is it just a money fight, but it is also for the top contender fight for the belt. The current title contender is Gilbert Burns, so in the meantime, the UFC should find the next opponent for the winner of Usman vs Burns.
Although it is not for the title, the Covington vs Masvidal fight could easily beat Usman vs Burns in terms of PPV revenue. The casual fans want to watch bad blood and especially how big the name of Masvidal is right now. Jorge Masvidal might be the second-biggest name in the UFC right now, due to his big PPV success on a short notice fight against Usman.
Masvidal gained extreme popularity with his wins over Darren Till, Ben Askren and for the BMF Belt against Nate Diaz. The Diaz fight was a huge success even without UFC titles on the line, it was a one-time BMF belt according to Dana White. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson even joined the event and put the belt on the winner of the fight.
Colby Covington is also a big name in the welterweight division considering that he may be the second-best welterweight behind Kamaru Usman. The fight was so close that it could have gone either way. Both wrestlers did not choose to use their wrestling but chose to strike from start to end.
Now the only fight that makes sense is Covington vs Masvidal. Prior to their rise in the UFC as legit contenders, both were best friends that shared an apartment. They were like brothers that cannot be separated.
According to Masvidal, the reason for their feud is that Covington did not pay his coaches who were also great friends with Masvidal. Both have the same team which is American Top Team.
American Top Team is owned by Dan Lambert who is also Covington’s manager. Although the reason that Covington left the team was that Lambert won’t tolerate disrespecting or trash-talking fellow teammates. Both still respect each other even though Covington has a different team.
Some fans also long for The Ultimate Fighter series with Covington vs Masvidal. The bad blood and history alone will guarantee success in terms of tv viewership. The only thing that could top it would probably be Jones vs Adesanya but rumors are that the fight won’t happen soon since Adesanya might be fighting Jan and Jones is moving up to heavyweight.
Some reports say that Covington has agreed to fight Masvidal but the reason the fight has not officially announced is because of Masvidal’s team. Jorge Masvidal may not be interested in fighting Colby Covington since he does not want to give Covington the biggest payday of his career. Masvidal is the most popular fighter in the division, so a fight with him would generate huge numbers.
There are not really any options for Masvidal since most fighters are booked. Leon Edwards also has bad blood with Masvidal but is booked to fight Khamzat Chimaev. A fight with Nate Diaz does not make sense since he destroyed Diaz most of the fight, so it would make sense that Colby Covington is the right opponent for Masvidal if he ever wants another shot for the title.
Is masvidal scared? I hope not
