ESPN’s Pound for Pound King is looking for a potential money fight with Manny Pacquiao. After his win against Kell Brook, he said in his interview that he wants the Filipino boxer. Manny Pacquiao is the current WBA super Welterweight Champion. If both boxers agree it would potentially unify the WBA and WBO title fight.
The Four major titles are currently held by only 3 boxers. Errol Spence Jr who owns the WBC and IBF title when he beat Shawn Porter and Kell Brook. Terence Crawford is the WBO champion and Manny Pacquiao just won the WBA against Keith Thurman. In terms of what the hardcore boxing fans want it is obvious, Spence Jr vs Crawford is the fight to make. Both are the clear top 2 in the division and at their prime. The biggest issue why the fight didn’t materialize is fighter/promoter negotiations. Mayweather created the undefeated illusion that if one fighter has a loss, it ruins his legacy. Promoters also want to protect their star from losing and getting them easier fights.
Crawford is chasing Manny Pacquiao since it might potentially offer a bigger payday since Pacquiao is a big draw in the boxing world. Even casual fans stay tune to watch Pacquiao fight. A win against Manny also puts one of the biggest names in boxing, in his resume. Manny Pacquiao has already proven to be an all-time great and doesn’t need to prove to anyone that he can still compete with the top dogs. Even though Manny can still hang with them, it is better that he can take easier money fights. Fighting Mcgregor or the smaller Mikey Garcia is a much more fun fight. Manny is already in his 70th pro fight and is already 41 years old.
Spence Jr vs Crawford needs to happen as soon as possible but Spence Jr vs Danny Garcia needs to happen first. On December 5, Spence Jr is set to defend his titles against Danny Garcia. In order for the Crawford vs Spence fight to happen, Spence needs to win his fight against Garcia.
If the Spence Jr vs Crawford fight happens, it will once again unify three of the four major boxing titles. The Welterweight division right now has the most top 10 pound for pound boxers which says a lot about their talents. Crawford is also a free agent in a few months and could join PBC promotions. If that happens, both boxers will have the same promoter making it easier to make the fight happen.
The talents in the welterweight division not only consists of the three champions. There are also big names like Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, and Danny Garcia. It won’t be easy for the titles to be unified due to many belts but it is still possible. Fighting to be the undisputed champion is one of the best feats a boxer can do for his legacy and resume.
