Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are the only major heavyweight champions right now. Both fighters have shown interest in fighting in England. It will be without a doubt the biggest fight in British boxing. There are so many great boxers who are English. Lennox Lewis who became the undisputed heavyweight champion has the one of best resumes in terms of Heavyweight boxer.
Only 2 things are stopping Fury vs Joshua from happening and it is Wilder contract and the promoters. Due to the rematch clause in the contract, Fury has to fight Wilder or else legal action will be initiated. Although in terms of legality, the rematch clause is now expired during the pandemic. The ruling has not yet been declared whether the rematch clause is extended or not. Most fans think that Fury beat Wilder so one-sided that no one is interested in seeing the third fight but it could be Wilder’s last chance to be a champion again.
Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren, and Bob Arum have also said that the fight is going to happen. Bob Arum does not like to have a rematch clause in the contract since it only gives a safety net for the loser of the match. The initial offer was the fight to happen immediately happen by giving Kubrat Pulev (Joshua’s opponent) and Wilder an offer that makes them step aside and let Joshua vs Fury happen. Wilder declined the offer and has decided to fight Fury instead.
If the pandemic didn’t happen, the Joshua vs Fury may have happened early next year. Anthony Joshua is a guaranteed draw in the United Kingdom. When he fought against boxers that are not even championship-caliber, people still watch him fight. The O2 stadium is always full when Joshua fights.
The only loss of Anthony Joshua was when he fought Andy Ruiz on a short notice fight. It was Joshua’s US debut and he wanted to make a statement. The US debut was booked for the future Wilder unification fight. Jarell Miller was the original opponent that Joshua was supposed to face but he later tested positive for banned substances. Andy Ruiz stepped up for a short-notice fight.
Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz was one of the biggest upsets in modern boxing. Ruiz came in a heavy underdog and no one expected him to win. In the third round of the fight, Joshua landed an uppercut left hook combo that knocked Ruiz down. Joshua was going for the finish, all of a sudden Ruiz landed a counterpunch above the ear of Joshua that stunned him. It was the turning point of the match that proved to be pivotal in the fight results. The fight as a whole was like a cinderella movie. Ruiz who no one expected to win overcame the odds and became the heavyweight champion of the world.
In the rematch, Joshua proved that he is a real champion by coming back and making adjustments to win the fight. He decided to fight on the outside and use his range to keep a distance. Ruiz came in overweight and some say fame got the best of him.
Tyson Fury is still undefeated to this day and has become the underdog on the big stage. His fight with Klitschko and the first Wilder fight proved that he is truly an odds beater. The boxer that I can compare him to is Muhammad Ali. Although Ali is greater in terms of resume, Ali was also a huge underdog against Sonny Liston (then champion) and George Foreman (Power puncher).
The greatest win of both fighters is against Wladimir Klitschko, they are also in their prime. It will be the biggest fight in British Boxing.
