James Te Huna
James Te Huna was already on a three-fight losing streak, which had included a 63 second knockout loss to Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, when he was assigned a fight against former hockey enforcer Steve Bosse at UFC Fight Night 85 in 2016.
It didn’t last long as the New Zealander was caught by a right hook that knocked him out only 52 seconds into the fight.
Worse still, in the aftermath of the fight Te Huna was taken to hospital suffering from a suspected bleed on the brain, at which point doctor’s also discovered via a scan that he had multiple lesions on his brain.
That suggested that Te Huna had experienced multiple concussions over the course of his long career, although the one that he experienced after his fight with Bosse proved to be by far the most debilitating
For a month after the fight Te Huna suffered symptoms, including forgetfulness, that would lead to him repeating himself over and over again without realizing it, or forgetting what he was saying in the middle of a conversation.
It was a dark time and after the concussion cleared up the bleed on the brain and lesions left the 34-year-old Te Huna in little doubt that his career had come to an end.
