With a few days ahead of the boxing fight, the pound for pound King, Saul Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2) is set to face Callum Smith (27-0) on 19 December 2020. Canelo may arguably be the face of boxing right now due to his big stardom and Mexican heritage.
Canelo has a big country, Mexico behind him when he fights. His last fight was against a bigger guy as well which was Sergey Kovalev. Kovalev is an accomplished and well known light-heavyweight boxer. Canelo knocked him out in the later rounds which made him the WBO light-heavyweight champion.
Callum Smith is a natural super-middleweight so the field that he is set to fight is an advantage for him. Ever since he started pro-boxing he was already a super-middleweight and is still undefeated. Smith is set to defend his WBA and Ring Magazine Super-middleweight Champion against Canelo. The vacant WBC super-middleweight belt is also set for grabs.
In terms of physical attributes, Callum Smith has a big advantage. He is longer and taller built compared to Canelo. Smith could use his reach advantage for his key to victory. Even though Smith is a long fighter, he is still a skilled boxer that does not always rely on his physical advantage.
In their first face-off, you can see Callum Smith is so much bigger compared to Canelo. Like with the size difference, one could assume that both fighters have a different weight class.
With the physical advantage of Smith, Canelo is still coming in as the heavy favorite to the fight. Canelo has proven time and time that he can walk down bigger fighters and eventually win the fight. His only loss came from arguably the greatest boxer to ever live, Floyd Mayweather, and when they fought Canelo was still green.
After suffering his only loss to Mayweather, Canelo became even better by putting a mix of Mayweather’s style to his arsenals. He became both an offensive and defensive-oriented boxer.
In terms of resume and experience, Canelo has it by a mile as well. Canelo has beaten better opponents and has more fights than Smith. Smith has only fought in one division and just defended his belt. Meanwhile, Canelo has moved up many divisions and has beaten champions of other divisions.
This fight is Canelo’s first fight since opting out of the Golden Boy Promotions. There is ring rust for Canelo since his last fight was more than a year. But to be fair, both fighters had their last fight in November of last year.
Since Canelo is coming up as a heavy favorite, people are expecting him to win easily. But the betting odds seem to forget that Smith is the bigger guy that is also a skilled boxer in his rights. The fight is also on Smith’s natural division so it would be wise to bet small on Smith, since he may win as the underdog.
If the betting odds of Canelo as the favorite but close only then it would be a different story, but to come out like a heavy favorite. Betting on Smith is a safer bet since you bet less to gain more considering Smith’s advantages.
