Sometimes the heat of the moment causes people to do things they really didn’t think through. Fighters call for retirement all the time following a painful loss.
Whether or not this would be the last time we see UFC light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson after his defeat to champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 remains to be seen, but if it is, Johnson will surely be missed inside the Octagon.
Cormier (19-1) utilized his imposing physicality much like in their first fight to wear down Johnson (22-6) who had his moments but ultimately succumbed via rear-naked choke halfway through the second round.
Moments after Johnson’s submission loss, “Rumble” took to social media to reach out to his fans
“I went all out and don’t regret anything… I’m tired and the time is now for me to keep it moving… Some say holding on is what makes you strong. But sometimes it takes much more than strength to just let go and move on,” Johnson said in a Facebook post.
To be fair, it was a close fight for as long as it lasted, with Johnson landing some very telling blows on Cormier. “DC” however was just too strong and too experienced. And his chin was like granite. Johnson hit him with his best shots, but it wasn’t enough.
Fans also expressed dismay as to why Johnson would at times try to grapple with Cormier, an elite wrestler.
Johnson also dispelled rumors that he was going to play professional football
“No you knuckleheads I’m not playing for the Rams… Are you crazy?!” said Johnson in a separate Facebook post.
Whether or not Johnson pushes through with retirement remains to be seen. If he is still on the fence, a big money fight against a comebacking Jon Jones could entice him to give it another go.
Nevertheless, Johnson is still talented enough and may just need some time away from the Octagon.
