Randy Brown is determined to enter the UFC ranking, and he thinks Michael Chiesa is the path leading there. Thankfully for him, the No. 14 welterweight is interested in fighting him, with Brown revealing his talk with the fellow fighter about joining the UFC 300 card.
Brown recently made a success at UFC Fight Night 235 by defeating Muslim Salikhov via a first-round TKO in their match. After this, the fighter shared his future plan. Needless to say, Brown wants a spot in the ranking and called out Chiesa. Prior to his fight, Brown had already made a callout toward “Maverick,” and he received a positive response to it. According to “Rudeboy,” he talked with Chiesa when the fellow fighter served as a UFC Fight Night 235 desk analyst.
“We’re trying to get it done,” Brown said during the post-fight at UFC Fight Night 235. “He said maybe UFC 300 is a little too soon for him, but he wants to do it. If he’s a man of his word, which I think he is, hopefully, the UFC can come to something, or we can go to the UFC and work it out. We’ll see.”
While this is good news to fans, the match remains uncertain as UFC still has to approve the bout. Most of all, Brown stressed that it would ultimately depend on Chiesa’s decision. Brown doesn’t mind making a quick turnaround to join the UFC 300, but he noted that Chiesa is still undecided about fighting in April. Yet, for Brown, getting a fight is something the 36-year-old should do as soon as possible to prove his worth in the UFC ranking.
“I just always thought we would be a good matchup for years,” Brown said. “These are the guys that I’ve been watching. These are guys that when I grew up watching MMA as an amateur, that I’ve seen in ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and I’ve got a ton of respect for them. I just think you have to defend your ranking. As someone established in the rankings – or, as you say, ‘a contender’ – you can’t just rest on your laurels. This isn’t a shot to him or anything, but I just feel like he doesn’t fight as consistent as he should.
“If I’m a contender coming up and I’m looking at these guys, and I’m like, ‘Who can I realistically get a matchup with?’ and the guys that aren’t fighting – you’ve got to do something to prove you belong in that spot. I feel like he’s one of the guys that don’t fight enough, so I just locked in on him.”
