So it looks as though Conor McGregor’s next fight in the UFC is pretty much certain…

During a truly unique sequence of events, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor faced Floyd Mayweather last weekend. Although he was finished by technical knockout in round 10, McGregor did reasonably well all things considered.

Against one of the defensive greats, ‘The Notorious’ managed to land at a decent rate. That said, some fans believe Mayweather allowed him to for entertainment purposes. However you view MayMac, it was an interesting experiment at the least.

Now likely done with his boxing career, the brash Irishman turns his attention back to MMA. Contenders are lining up at 155 pounds, but the Kevin Lee vs. Tony Ferguson interim title fight doesn’t seem to appeal to McGregor.

During his most recent interview, the current 155-pound boss says his old rival Nate Diaz is next. Prepare for some upset contenders, as McGregor reveals the catch to the Nate Diaz trilogy fight:

Looks like Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor are going to do it all again…

155…Motherf*ckers

Speaking with BBC, via LowKickMMA.com, McGregor says he’ll fight against Diaz, but his old foe must make 155 pounds:

“I’m the 155-pound champion. I faced him at 170, he beat me, then I rematched him at 170, I beat him. Now I’m the 155-pound world champion, now if he wants that fight, he must come down — that’s a fair trade. I didn’t ask for the rematch at a lower weight, I asked for the rematch at the exact same weight. I thought that was a fair play move on my behalf and I came in and I won. So, now I won that and I won the 155 title after that, so if he wants the fight he has to make that 155-pound limit.”

This would mean Diaz getting the next shot at the lightweight title. It appears that whenever McGregor is involved, rankings go out the window. Having been inactive since UFC 202 last August, Diaz is no doubt fourth in the line for the next title shot, at best…

McGregor vs. Diaz 3…

Undoubtedly it’s the biggest fight available to make right now, but it definitely ignores the rankings. Although he struggles to make weight, Khabib Nurmagomedov is up there, as will be the winner of Ferguson vs. Lee.

Speaking with reporters after MayMac, McGregor’s manager goes further into the reasoning behind wanting a trilogy bout:

“He wants that trilogy (with Diaz),” Attar told MMAjunkie. “You’ve got Khabib calling him out, then you obviously have Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee who are fighting for the interim lightweight title. You have Max Holloway, who is the 145 champ now, who Conor beat after blowing out his ACL at the beginning of the fight. You have options, and he loves mixed martial arts.”

“Everyone is like, ‘Oh, he’s going to retire – he made so much money.’ He’s ambitious. He’s super ambitious, and he loves to fight. He loves to compete and he’s a superb professional athlete. So there’s much more of Conor McGregor that everybody will see, and we’ll see what’s next.”

“He’s so critical of himself,” Attar said. “He’s already watching film and dissecting his performance and what went wrong and it really reminded me of (the first) Diaz fight. You saw him there, humble in defeat, retool, learn, grew, came back in the rematch and looked like a different fighter. It kind of had that feeling. Bittersweet, but nonetheless I’m super happy for him.”

  1. The only reason Diaz – McGregor 1 was at 170 was because Diaz took the fight on 11 days notice. Diaz fights in the 155 lb. class, so don’t act like you’re laying down the law when you demand that the fight take place at 155.

    • He’s not acting like he’s laying down the law – this is something that McGregor said shortly after the Diaz 2-fight and has been widely known for a long time. It’s the headlines on sites like Scrapdigest that writes “Conor McGregor Agrees to Fight Nate Diaz on One Condition”.
