Justin Gaethje put on the performance of his life as he beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida. The American showed off the development of his game as he clinically brutalized ‘El Cucuy.’ Now the interim lightweight champion, he should fight Khabib Nurmagamedov next.
However, Conor McGregor believes that he will fight Gaethje before Khabib does. The Irishman is adamant that the Russian won’t be ready before him and that he’ll try to duck out of this fight. While that seems unlikely, it does create an intriguing situation for the UFC.
If they can get a quick turnaround for Gaethje, then a clash with McGregor would be perfect. A win for the Irishman would be miraculous in their hopes for a rematch with Khabib. Meanwhile, if Gaethje won, it would be a brilliant way for him to get mainstream exposure before his official title fight.
In short, the Irishman is adamant that Khabib will duck out of this fight. Currently, ‘The Eagle’ is trapped in Russia while he also has to observe the Islamic festival of Ramadan. These days he only seems to fight once a year. That window is closing quickly. It’s worth mentioning that there is a travel ban between the US and Europe so McGregor can’t get in either. But he tweeted:
“The fans make the sport! Watching the other night I was against going in without them. But it will be my f**king pleasure to display the power I possess with zero background noise for them. Its me and Justin next as khabib is the biggest bottle fighter in the game. Guarantee it.”
The Irishman condemned Ali Abdelaziz after the manager decided to get involved in the conversation. He represents both Khabib and Gaethje so he has a lot riding on their potential fight. However, McGregor went to town even calling him a terrorist. It’s worth mentioning that McGregor has a profound appreciation for the US justice system after several experiences of its hospitality. He wrote:
“Don’t ever say you represent the great nation of the United States of America ever again. No true American would speak so highly of, or allow, a convicted member of a Jihadi terror cell represent them. Never Forget! You are a f**king blind fool, and I am going to finish the job.”
McGregor also laid into Khabib’s response to the Gaethje v Ferguson fight. The Russian just tweeted, ‘No Comment’ as after Gaethje got the win. In short, the Irishman called him a rat and condemned him for hiding away. However, this is a selective interpretation. Neither man can leave their countries right now.
“Khabib you absolute embarrassment. Scurrying, hiding rat as usual. As I have said many times. As has been seen many times. Through the pane of glass it was confirmed what was always known. “No comment” lol. An embarrassment to real fighting.”
We’ve said this before but Gaethje v McGregor for the interim championship makes a lot of sense from the UFC’s perspective. Wait and see how this one plays out.
