Continuing his wild ride through the world of MMA, Conor McGregor caught everyone’s attention in 2016. Although he had a very tough start to the year, ‘The Notorious’ eventually clawed it back.

Against Nate Diaz in a short notice UFC 196 thriller, McGregor was submitted inside two rounds. Putting in a fight of the year candidate at UFC 202, McGregor edged his rival with a close decision. Then came UFC 205, and the teasing of a ‘huge announcement.’

UFC 205 & Beyond

Taking out Eddie Alvarez in New York, McGregor became the two-weight world champion. Then he revealed his big announcement, or at least we thought he did. His partner Dee Devlin is pregnant, and now it was time for the Irishman to take 10 months off.

Well, as we learned during the eventful interview with Ariel Helwani this week, that wasn’t McGregor’s big announcement. Check it out below:

Conor McGregor’s Big Announcement

“I have my eyes on one thing and that’s Floyd Mayweather. That’s the thing I have my eyes on.”

“You know, remember that announcement? I was gonna stand in the middle of that octagon and be like — I had a date booked and everything, I went and I [booked] The O2 Arena. So I had fights and everything planned out in my head. I was gonna host a [MMA] show.

The same way Nick [Diaz] did WAR, I was gonna do that. And then last minute, I was like, ‘Ah, just leave. You already have the two belts. You’re already in a strong position. Let’s just chill on it.’”

So McGregor Was Going To Follow In Nick Diaz’s Footsteps? Interesting…

Finally, ‘The Notorious’ confirmed his plans for a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather:

“Me and Floyd have got to get together and talk and figure it out the same way him and Manny figured it out,” McGregor said. “Once we come to a number, once we come to a set number that I’m happy with, that he’s happy with and then we go to the customers. Then we go to the promoters, the buyers and then we get it done. That’s next.

“I’ll go to Vegas, I’ll handle the commission or we’ll figure that situation out and then we’ll come to a dotted line and then we’ll go, but this is happening.”
