While everyone is waiting on the blockbuster Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor superfight which goes down in just a few hours, there is one man who isn’t happy with it all. Former Mexican boxing great “The Golden Boy” Oscar Dela Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, has publicly aired his distaste for the fight since it was first announced.
Dela Hoya, who is putting together the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin bout in September, is obviously worried about his own event. Since Mayweather-McGregor is expected to shatter all of combat sports’ financial records, this means fans have opted to purchase this event over the Canelo-GGG event.
Because the two shows are so close to each other in terms of airdate, some fans will undoubtedly have to choose just one. Let’s face it, these Pay-Per-View events ain’t cheap. Mayweather-McGregor itself is virtually a hundred dollars a pop.
Dela Hoya airs his distaste for Mayweather-McGregor on Twitter
In a short but very nasty Tweet from Dela Hoya, the former boxer said: “F*** YOU #MayweatherVsMcGregor BOTH OF YOU ARE DISRESPECTING THE SPORT OF BOXING #CaneloGGG Sept 16th”
While the Mayweather-McGregor fight is going down today, August 26th, Canelo-GGG takes place just three weeks later on September 16th. If you’re like most people, you can probably only afford to buy one of these.
With such a nasty Tweet, it was inevitable that someone would respond. And who better than UFC President Dana White himself? White has been by McGregor’s side through this entire ordeal. He even pulled McGregor out of his usual gym facilities and gave him access to state-of-the-art equipment at the UFC gym in Las Vegas.
Since McGregor is in effect representing the UFC in this bout, in fact probably all of MMA, then White getting behind his boy is no surprise.
White responded to Dela Hoya back on Twitter, and it was absolutely savage.
Dana White DESTROYS Oscar Dela Hoya on Twitter
The only way this fight becomes a disrespect of boxing is if McGregor gets completely blown out by Mayweather, worse, gets stopped. Most people are expecting Mayweather to win, but if McGregor can hang on until the end of the bout, it will be a victory in and of itself.
McGregor however, has remained confident that he will shock the world.
“I’m very happy with how camp has gone. Everything has been absolutely amazing. I have to shout out my team and everyone who’s been involved with camp. We’re prepared for 12 rounds of nonstop pace. I will go forward and put the pressure on and break this old man,” said McGregor in the final press conference.
“He made a big error agreeing to the eight ounce gloves. I don’t see him lasting two rounds. I think I could end him in one round if I want. He messed up. I’m very happy with these gloves. I don’t care where your hands are, I’m going to break through whatever is in front of me.
“I really appreciate the support from everyone back home and all over the world, it’s been very humbling and motivating. That’s why I’ve put in such hard work for this fight. I’m going to go out and perform. I’m going to out box this man at his own game. That’s how much of a different level I’m on.
“When it’s all said and done I’m going to feel a little bit sad. You should have kept your mouth shut and left me over where I was. This man is not on my level. He’s not a quarter of the man I am. Everyone is going to eat their words.
“He’s a beaten man. He will not be able to take the ferociousness that I come with. I’m very confident. I have more skills in many areas and as a true martial artist, I can adapt to any situation.”
Well Connor did surprisingly well !! Good for him… Good fight !!
