UFC Featherweight Champion, Alexander Volkanovski is being set to defend his belt against Brian Ortega in February 2021. Volkanosvki is ready for his next opponent after fight then-champion Max Holloway twice in a close decision match.
Brian Ortega also fought for the title against Holloway but was brutally beat up that he needed a long time to recover from the damage. Fortunately, it was all worth it since his comeback fight against the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung, he showed huge improvements in his game, especially in the striking department.
Ortega was known prior to the Zombie fight to be a huge threat in the ground but during his comeback fight, he showed to have a complete toolset to be the next featherweight champion. He outstruck and even scored few knockdowns against the Korean Zombie.
Also on the mix, Max Holloway is set to face Calvin Kattar in a main event fight night. Holloway is looking to get back on a title run. When asked about his last match, he said that most of the people, even not his fans but fighters also thought that Holloway won the rematch but it doesn’t matter since what matters is the judges’ scores.
Holloway also said he is willing to face Volkanovski 100 times to prove that he is the better fighter. If Max Holloway beats Calvin Kattar in an impressive way it is likely that he could get a title shot within next year.
If Ortega could somehow beat Volkanovski, it could potentially lead to a rematch with Holloway vs Ortega II. Since it was a huge beating that he could look to avenge, especially how improved Ortega looked in his comeback fight.
The featherweight division is also stacked with top contenders, Calvin Kattar could beat Max Holloway with his high-level boxing abilities. Another top contender is Russian fighter, Zabit Magomedsharipov who was set to face Yair Rodriguez but always pulled out of the fight.
The fight to make is Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Chan Sung Jung for the top contender spot but UFC has not yet announced Zabit’s next fight. There are a lot of fighters that could upset the division but also at the same time, Volkanovski and Holloway look to be the elites in the division.
