Infamous grappling tournament, the Eddie Bravo Invitational, held another event last Sunday. One of its competitors shocked the audience with an unorthodox guard technique that has never been seen before.
The Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) was started by renowned grappler Eddie Bravo, himself. Bravo is of course, the founder of the acclaimed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu camp, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also a frequent guest on Joe Rogan’s Youtube podcast. Since founding the Eddie Bravo Invitational. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have been striving to participate in the tournament in search of glory.
The greatest grapplers in the world flock to the Eddie Bravo Invitational to showcase their skills. Some even compete in professional mixed martial arts.
Viral New Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Guard
With so many talented grapplers competing, it’s almost a surefire thing that fans will get to see tons of moves they’ve never seen before. Some of the techniques, while unorthodox, are just downright effective.
During the semi-finals of the recently concluded tournament, one grappler was caught with his back on the mat. It was then that he decided to spread his legs as far as possible while grabbing his ankles. Can you picture it in your mind? Let’s just say the move wasn’t exactly the prettiest.
His opponent, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu badass Garry “Lion Killer” Tonon of the United States, was stunned by the odd maneuver. Tonon ended up winning the match and in the finals, successfully retained his lightweight belt by defeating Vagner Rocha with his patented heel hook.
Garry Tonon Moves on to Mixed Martial Arts
Tonon, who is known as one of the most talented grapplers in the world, has recently made the decision to transition to Mixed Martial Arts. The American submissions specialist signed with Asia’s largest mixed martial arts promotion, ONE Championship.
Chatri Sityodtong, the promotion’s Chairman and CEO, stated in a press release:
“It is with great excitement that I announce the newest addition to ONE Championship’s elite list of global martial arts superstars, American submission grappling legend Garry Tonon. Garry is an amazing individual with a long list of accolades in submission grappling. I have no doubt that his transition to the ONE Championship cage will be a successful one. Fans have a lot to look forward to when Garry finally makes his debut with us.”
Tonon is an American submission grappling superstar from New Jersey. He began wrestling in primary school, competing as an amateur before being introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the age of 14.
No Word Yet on Tonon’s Debut Bout…
Under the tutelage of coach Tom deBlass and the legendary Ricardo Almeida, Tonon would go on to win multiple IBJJF No-Gi world championships in different belts. In September of 2013, deBlass and Almeida awarded Tonon a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Shortly after, his professional grappling career began, and Tonon would later win multiple titles at the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) and Metamoris professional grappling leagues.
Tonon also said he was ready to try his hand at MMA.
