The UFC Treats Black Champions Differently

Woodley points out that black UFC champions don’t receive the same kind of treatment or respect as white champions do. But is he right?

“Coming into this fight, I felt like Wonderboy was promoted as the champion,” Woodley said of the challenger, Stephen Thompson, prior to their match up a UFC 205.

“I’m the champion! I knocked out the baddest welterweight in the world in record-breaking time and I don’t get the respect I deserve.”

Not only that, but also in the case of the Ronda Rousey – Amanda Nunes fight. Nunes, although Brazilian in nationality, is the UFC women’s bantamweight champion. Yet during the lead up to the epic bout with Rousey, Nunes received virtually zero promotion.

She was absent from most of the TV spots and press appearances. Granted Rousey refused to appear before the press, making anything to do with Nunes also next to impossible. Still, the UFC could have shown the champion a little more respect.
