Georges St. Piere is Officially Interested in Legacy Fight Against Khabib Nurmagamedov…

Georges St. Pierre is arguably the greatest UFC fighter of all time. While Tyron Woodley is slowly edging closer, GSP is still the most dominant welterweight champion ever with a record number of title defenses. He’s also classy on the microphone and has never tested positive for PEDs – a true martial artist and a clean athlete.

He made his comeback in 2017 after a four-year hiatus, when he stepped up to middleweight and took the 185lb strap from then-incumbent champion Michael Bisping via submission. He became only the fifth champ-champ in the history of the UFC.

Now he’s got his eye on lightweight king Khabib Nurmagamedov, as he looks to seal his legacy as one of the most legendary martial artists to ever step into a cage. It’s Khabib time for ‘Rush’.

Recovery

First and foremost, St. Pierre is making sure that his recovery is carefully managed. He suffered from colitis after the fight against Bisping, because of all the weight that he had to put on. It affected his digestive system and made his ability to make weight a brutal experience. He said:

“The big issue for fighting for me is the symptoms of colitis. I have to get rid of my medications. Once I get the dose down to where I want it to be I’ll make the decision. Right now I’m not ready to sign a fight deal as we speak. Mentally, I don’t want to fight right now.”

Legacy

‘Rush’ said that he will retire unless there is the chance of a ‘legacy’ fight. The one that is the most interesting is against current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagamedov, who is just coming off the back of a dominant win over Conor McGregor. There’s no doubt that the chance to become the UFC’s first triple-champion is attractive to GSP.

“The thing that excite me the most is when I could be the first to do something. When something cannot be done and people doubt me. He’s a great champion and in terms of legacy, I can’t think of a better fighter right now who has a better legacy than Khabib.”

Of course, the biggest challenge would be making weight. St. Pierre wouldn’t say it if he couldn’t do it, so this is definitely one to keep an eye on. Khabib has also made it clear that there’s no fight he wants more than this – forget Floyd Mayweather.

Welterweight King

The other big option is the chance to go back to his old home at welterweight. Tyron Woodley currently reigns as champion and doesn’t look like losing any time soon. He turned a corner the way he tore through Darren Till last time around, and GSP had nothing but good things to say about T-Wood:

“Tyron Woodley, his last performance was amazing. He’s doing very well. He’s making a big name for himself. To get a legacy in the sport, it doesn’t come in one day. It took me nine title defenses to get the name that I have.”

Khabib is definitely first on his list though. Who would you like to see GSP fight next – if he comes back at all?
