Khabib Nurmagamedov’s Name is Being Linked to Many Fights Right Now… Let’s Take a Look at Who He Should Fight Next…

It looks like Conor McGregor might not be in Khabib Nurmagamedov’s future after all. The Russian lightweight champion of the world has turned down a $15 million offer from the UFC to fight the ‘Notorious’ in a rematch next year. That might just be posturing, but we don’t know yet.

Options are opening up for Khabib, and he’s very carefully deciding his next step. He’s all rejected a $2 million offer from rapper 50 Cent to fight for Bellator, saying that he’d need $50 million to cross promotions. Right now he’s engaged in a back-and-forth with Floyd Mayweather as he searches for the money fight he so desperately wants.

The big question is who should Khabib Nurmagamedov fight next? There are a few options that make sense in terms of legacy and money. We’ll rank them in order of hardcore fan excitement and the chances of it actually happening.

The Rematch

If Khabib wants to show that his victory over McGregor wasn’t just a freak win (he’s only done it 27 times) then this is definitely the biggest guaranteed payday he’ll get. It’s massively promotable thanks to all the brawl footage from UFC 229, and he’d surely enjoy the chance to humble ‘The Notorious’ again.

The Real Challenge

Another lightweight fighter who really impressed at UFC 229 was Tony Ferguson. On paper, this is the toughest fight in the division for Khabib. ‘El Cucuy’s’ forward pressure and ability off of his back would make him a fascinating opponent. The former interim champion deserves a shot – too bad his name isn’t mainstream enough and that they’ve been booked to fight four times before.

The Champ Champ fight

This hasn’t really been talked about yet, but imagine if Khabib decides to take another leaf out of the McGregor playbook and try and claim another division? He’s definitely big enough for welterweight and a clash with Tyron Woodley would be incredible. If any fighter has the physicality to disrupt Khabib’s game it’s T-Wood. Fans might be unhappy watching five rounds of wrestling though.

The Legacy Fight

Georges St. Pierre is still recovering from colitis but made it clear to Ariel Helwani that the one fight that would enhance his legacy would be to fight Khabib. It would be lucrative for both men. Khabib would have the chance to defeat one of the greatest of all time, while GSP could become the first triple champion in the promotion. Could he make the weight cut and would the UFC risk letting him vacate another title?

The Money Fight

Over the past few days, there has been a back and forth between Khabib and Mayweather. Nobody knows just how serious this is – probably not even Khabib. This would be a big money venture for the Russian but he’d almost definitely get dissected in the boxing ring. He’s also a lot bigger than Mayweather. Don’t get too excited just yet.
