Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been away for a long time. The last time St-Pierre fought was at UFC 167 in 2013. The victory ‘GSP’ earned that night over Johny Hendricks was highly debatable.

Previously known for his dominant performances in the octagon, ‘Rush’ was starting to look a shell of his former self. His vacation of the welterweight title still came as a shock though. It was drug abuse and personal issues that had apparently forced St-Pierre to leave the UFC.

UFC president Dana White was so furious with GSP that he reportedly had the belt taken from him in the locker room. Nothing was even official yet and the promotion was aking their four pounds of gold back.

St-Pierre would remain on the sidelines while the belt changed hands three times. Johny Hendricks first won the vacated title at UFC 171, before losing it to Robbie Lawler in their rematch.

Title changes

Lawler defended the strap against Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit before facing Tyron Woodley at UFC 201. This is where things got very interesting indeed. Woodley knocked out ‘Ruthless’ in the first round.

Then came St-Pierre’s hue announcement…
