Glover Teixeira has once again uplifted the name of current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira, saying he’s on a different level. Aside from that, the coach lauded the UFC decision for an Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill bout, expressing his confidence that his fighter will handle it with pure prowess.
Teixeira coaches and mentors Pereira, and the work of the two paid off at UFC 295 last weekend. In his fight against Jiri Prochazka, Poatan sealed the fight by delivering a short left uppercut and a series of ground-and-pound moves. The bout ended at 04:08 of Round 2, with Pereira being the winner and a two-division UFC champion. He joined Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Georges St-Pierre, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo on the list of fighters who won UFC championships in two weight classes.
Teixeira was one of the individuals to quickly celebrate the victory, praising the performance of his Brazilian fighter. Alongside that, Teixeira seems pleased that Pereira will be battling Hill next.
Hill won the then-vacant title against Glover Teixeira in January. However, it was the last in his current four-winning streak after it caused him to injure his Achilles tendon and later vacant the belt. Teixeira believes Pereira can also succeed in this fight against the American.
“If that’s the fight, I think it’s going to be a great fight,” Teixeira told MMA Junkie. “Like I said about Jiri, they’re great warriors – guys that I fought. Between Jiri and Jamahal, we had 50 minutes there, pretty much. It’s a great fight for Alex. Alex is a different level – he’s a different beast.”
Hill, nonetheless, believes he’s the real champion in the division, saying neither Prochazka nor Pereira could match him.
“I thought it ended a little early,” Hill told ESPN. “But all in all, I was just thinking, like, neither one of these dudes are on my level. Neither one of them – I don’t think they are (as good as me) in any facet of the game, and I can’t wait to get back in full health and be able to show that.”
