8. On Travis Lutter and Michael Jordan
Goldberg: “Michael Jordan-esque in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills is Travis Lutter”
Joe Rogan: “No, no he’s not, no”
Mike Goldberg: “he’s not that good?”
Joe Rogan: “No”
Mike Goldberg: “Kobe Bryant then maybe?”
Travis Lutter is very good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s just not as good as Mike Goldberg once believed him to be.
Leading up to UFC 67, Travis Lutter had one the middleweight TUF3 tournament which granted him a title shot against champion Anderson Silva. This was the same tournament that Matt Serra won at welterweight and earned him a shot against Georges St. Pierre.
Goldberg just wanted to create a little interest in the fight and referred to Lutter as the Michael Jordan of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which Joe Rogan quickly disagreed with.
In Goldberg’s defence, you could say Lutter is the Michael Jordan of jiu-jitsu in Texas, that is a totally fair statement. He repeatedly finished first place in Texas-based jiu-jitsu tournaments in the late 90s.
He did come in 2nd place at the World Jiu-Jitsu championships in Brazil in 1998, which is amazing for someone who didn’t even take up the sport until after college. He’s good, really really good, but not as good as Jordan was at basketball.
Hahah, gotta love “Goldie”
” Travis Lutter had one the middleweight TUF3 ”
