There are very few names in the MMA world that we can describe as true needle movers. Often used by UFC president Dana White, that term is reserved for a few legitimately huge names in the UFC.
Obviously Ronda Rousey is up there, and of course the old school pay-per-view stars like Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. Now though, there are two big names who hold more weight than any current UFC fighters.
McGregor and Diaz
After just over three years in the UFC, current featherweight champion Conor McGregor has established himself as their biggest star. Although never holding a UFC title, the Diaz brothers have also risen to the status of superstars.
Starting out with a large cult following, both Nick and younger brother Nate Diaz broke through in the past 18 months. For older brother Nick, it was his controversy with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Nate Diaz really hit the jackpot when he defeated McGregor at UFC 196.
(Nick) Diaz vs. Conor McGregor?
According to UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, he’s been hearing rumours of another Diaz vs. McGregor fight. This time, though, it’s Nick Diaz vs. the Irishman that has Rogan all excited. Here’s what JR said on his most recent podcast episode:
“I heard this rumour, and I hope to God it’s true. I heard the UFC is trying to set up Nick Diaz vs. Conor McGregor. Can you imagine that fight? It would break the world. The hype for that fight would just be incredible.”
McGregor’s UFC 205 Fight
Although he has a huge fight ahead of him in Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, the future after that is a little uncertain. Reports of a ‘big announcement’ have fans wondering if McGregor will possibly retire, or maybe start up his own MMA promotion to rival the UFC.
Fighting Nick Diaz would certainly be an incredible fight for the fans, but questions about his commitment to drop back to defend the featherweight title would certainly be raised.
Here’s the segment of the Joe Rogan fight companion where he talks abut McGregor vs. Nick Diaz:
