After suffering a one-sided loss against Nunes, it seems that Megan Anderson will be released from her UFC contract. The women’s featherweight division is already lacking contenders as a roster then they remove one more fighter.
It is very likely that the UFC will close the division since the competition is just thin and Nunes is just dominating everyone so it would make sense. Although there are reports that UFC is still keeping the division as per some reporters. The question poses who should compete for the title next?
Regarding the reports out there about the UFC cutting its women’s featherweight division, UFC officials say it’s not true and what UFC president Dana White said Saturday about the future of the division still stands.

In the first place, the featherweight division was created to give way for Cris Cyborg since she could not make weight for the bantamweight division. During Cyborg’s reign, she was always a heavy favorite and probably the scariest fighter in UFC.

A lot of fighters were ducking her, even the then champion, Germaine De Randamie vacated the belt just to avoid fighting Cyborg. Then comes in Nunes, who attempted to become a two-division champion. In the fight, Nunes demolished her in under the first round.
After the loss, Cyborg wanted a rematch but she had a lot of issues with UFC specifically with Dana White which then later led her to be removed from her contract. Cyborg is now fighting on Bellator and is the current champion.
After defeating Cyborg, Nunes became the GOAT and no other fighter comes close to beating her. She just became invincible, the only fight that would probably pose a challenge against her would be Valentina Shevchenko but if that happens it would likely be at bantamweight.
As per Dana White, the division will stand as long as Nunes wants to continue defending the belt. Well, the only logical thing would be to sign top fighters that are featherweight. There are a lot of fighters that could pose a threat to Nunes, fighters like Kayla Harrison who has said that she plans to move to UFC if opportunity arises.
In the meantime, UFC may have a difficult time in finding an opponent equal to Nunes. Who can blame her, but fans will be in for a treat since it is rare to find a consensus GOAT especially in the sport of MMA.
