Mixed martial arts is a very dangerous sport, one that pits trained professional fighters against each other in a battle of speed, power, accuracy, knowledge, conditioning and endurance.

But the fight doesn’t start in the ring or cage, much like most other combat sports, the first fight is against one’s own weight. Making weight is a painful and long process for a fighter to go through, but more recently we’ve been learning just how dangerous it can be.

It’s taken many years for this to come around, and a number of tragic incidents and near misses too. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor cuts absurds amounts of weight, in the region of 20 pounds, to make 145 the day before a fight.

Jose Aldo, Renan Barao, Jon Jones and many other high profile fighters also drop massive weight before the day of the weigh-ins. The IV ban that came in last year did aid somewhat in the quest for fighter safety, but now it’s being taken a step further.
