Reports indicate that a gust of wind had distracted Barrio and the bull managed to catch him while waving the red crutch. Once it got hold of Barrio, it speared him through the chest, rupturing his heart and puncturing his lung.

Victor Barrio was rushed to hospital where doctors attempted to resuscitate him without success. With a sport like bull fighting, so obviously riddled with danger, these kinds of attacks are not uncommon.
