5. Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn UFC 112
This fight was the beginning of the end of “the Prodigy”.
It seems odd now to say that Edgar was an underdog heading into this fight considering how convincingly he beat Penn in all 3 of their fights, but he was. In his previous two fights (wins over Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian) BJ Penn looked as though he was finally going to have the lengthy lightweight title reign everyone thought he was destined to. Only he couldn’t catch up with Edgar in this fight, or in any other fight the two had. Edgar was too quick and danced around BJ Penn when he wasn’t landing punches on him. Just like that BJ Penn’s lightweight title reign was stopped at 3 title defences and would never resume.
Penn’s only victory since this bout was at UFC 123 over Matt Hughes, something Penn probably hopes to correct when he faces Ricardo Lamas next month.
