They Say Never Meet Your Heroes… Well, Colby Covington Seemed Delighted to Meet US President Donald Trump in the White House…

Colby Covington loves Donald Trump. He’s long been open about admiring the controversial US president. Well, he finally got the chance to meet his idol, when he visited the White House as an invited guest, and got to finally dump that belt on the Oval Office desk.

It’s been a very strange few weeks for Covington. He was meant to fight Tyron Woodley in October but was forced to withdraw because he is going to undergo nasal surgery. He’ll be fit to fight again by November, but that’s too long for the UFC who have been waiting for Woodley to come back for almost a year.

Instead, Darren Till will get the title shot. Covington showed that he’s not holding any grudges against UFC President Dana White. White is a longterm supporter and friend of Trump, and he managed to organize the meeting.

Delighted

Wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ cap, and beaming out into the camera, it was clear that Covington was delighted to meet his hero. Trump himself stood with the former interim welterweight champion’s belt slung over his shoulder. Covington tweeted:

“Like @POTUS @realDonaldTrump always says: Promises made. Promises kept. Pleasure to finally meet you Mr. President. Thank you for always putting America first!”

Covington should be condemned for meeting Trump: it looks like he hasn’t managed to persuade him to fight Joe Biden in the UFC. For shame, Colby, for shame. You had one job.

Sorry Bisping

Covington will also be delighted to have silenced Michael Bisping. The former UFC middleweight champion, and Fox Sports desk regular was openly gleeful when the Californian was stripped of his ‘meaningless’ title. He said:

“Colby Covington, good luck going to President Trump with empty hands. At least I’m holding a beer, what are you holding, dumb f—k?”

Well, while his belt might be meaningless because he was basically stripped of it as soon as he got it, Covington won’t care. He got to meet the most powerful man in the western world. Happy Colby.

Game Changer

Covington is right though. He did change the face of MMA: now nobody wants to fight for an interim title because they realize how meaningless they are. The Clovis, California fight got played. Fans were furious that he was stripped because it meant all that talk they were forced to listen to was for nothing. He spoiled the Avengers. I’m not over that yet.

It remains to be seen whether or not he will get the next title shot against the winner of Woodley v Till. Rising contender Kamaru Usman has been vocal about wanting to fight Covington as well. That would be a very dangerous fight for ‘Chaos.’ He’ll probably try and hold out for a shot at the title. You know… the real one.
